Lehel is one of Munich's most popular and expensive residential areas. This was not always the case: In the past, it was a catch-all for day laborers and their families who were not allowed to settle within the city walls.
Towards the end of the 19th century, the bourgeoisie built posh residential and apartment buildings in Lehel, to which the hovels, simple little houses in which entire large families lived, had to make way more and more.
