How to „Beer garden“ – 5 tips for newcomers

Cozy, inviting, hospitable: What would Munich be without its beer gardens? The following tips will help you prepare for your beer garden visit in Munich:

1. choose the right beer garden area

In the self-service area with beer tables and benches, you can get your own drinks and food. You can even bring your own snacks from home. However, drinks are bought on site. If you prefer a cozy atmosphere, you can have food and drinks brought to you by the staff at smaller tables in the service area.

2. may seats be reserved?

Seats may generally be reserved in the beer garden as long as the friends arrive in good numbers and in good time. However, the regulars' table is always reserved from the outset for guests who come regularly.

3. the drinks on offer

Beer is usually only available in "large format" from the beer mug, but soft drinks are also available in 0.5 l glasses. The rest of the beer remains in the mug when the waiter clears it. Bavarians prefer freshly tapped beer.
Insider tip: Please never tip the Noagerl into the new beer.

4 What is there to eat?

There are plenty of delicacies at the bar, such as snack platters or classic regional dishes. Don't be surprised if there are no cutlery nearby for the Steckerlfisch (smoked mackerel), which is eaten with your fingers.

5. the beer garden regulation

"Beer gardens fulfill important social and communicative functions", according to the Beer Garden Ordinance. In concrete terms, this means that you make room for others, address the person sitting next to you, call each other by their first name and toast each other.
