Au
Au-Giesing is located southeast of downtown Munich and refers to the contiguous residential area between Au, Untergiesing, and Obergiesing. Officially, these sub-areas extend from Au-Haidhausen, near the city center, to the Giesinger Berg and further toward Untergiesing. The area between the Isar River, the edge of the Isar hillside, and the neighborhoods close to the city center is particularly prominent.
For orientation, Haidhausen, Isarvorstadt, Glockenbachviertel, Untergiesing, Obergiesing, and Harlaching are particularly relevant. In terms of residential dynamics, Au-Giesing functions as a southeast location close to downtown with a strong identity of its own: more urban and central than classic suburban neighborhoods, yet more down-to-earth and often more community-oriented than many high-priced central locations.
Au-Giesing offers a pleasant living environment through three clearly distinguishable sub-areas. Au brings tradition, Mariahilfplatz, Nockherberg, and a dense suburban structure. Untergiesing is more closely associated with its proximity to the Isar, its history as a former working-class suburb, smaller houses, and dense rental housing. Obergiesing appears more diverse topographically and architecturally, with the classic Giesing neighborhood character, Alt-Giesing, soccer connections, and residential structures of varying densities. It is precisely this interplay that makes the area so interesting.
For everyday life, the area is well-equipped. The neighboring districts offer a wide range of educational and childcare options. The 2025 town hall meeting documents list, among others, Hochstraße Middle School, Maria-Theresia High School, Isar High School, and other locations for Au-Haidhausen; for Obergiesing-Fasangarten, several elementary schools, middle schools, and the Asam Gymnasium are listed; for Untergiesing-Harlaching, these include the Agilolfingerplatz Elementary School, the Fromundstraße Elementary School, the Theodolinden Gymnasium, and the Albert-Einstein Gymnasium. The coverage rates for kindergartens and full-day programs are also reported separately for each district.
Au-Giesing is typically of particular interest to people who want to live centrally but not in a sterile environment, in an urban setting but not anonymously: for families seeking a genuine urban location, for working professionals with short commutes to the city center, for couples focused on their neighborhood and everyday life, and for buyers and renters looking for a residential area with character that will remain attractive in the long term. This classification is an editorial assessment based on location, educational infrastructure, public transportation, and the urban landscape.

The Auer Dult is one of Munich’s most important traditional markets and takes place today at Mariahilfplatz. Official sources refer to the current market as the Maidult, Jakobidult, and Kirchweihdult. For the residents of the Au neighborhood, this is not just a minor tourist attraction, but an integral part of the neighborhood’s long-established culture.
Munich Tourism clearly highlights Giesing’s soccer culture, pubs, and brewing tradition. The Grünwald Stadium, Giesinger Bräu, and the classic “Boazn” are all part of the neighborhood’s character. For prospective residents, this means that Giesing feels lively and unique, without being overly polished.
Untergiesing and the Au benefit greatly from their proximity to the Isar, the Isar and Flaucher parks, and smaller bodies of water and green spaces such as the Auer Mühlbach. This adds real value to everyday life: Residents enjoy a very urban lifestyle while also having quick access to water, green spaces, and opportunities for exercise.
