Living in Lerchenau: A Peaceful Life Between the Lake, Remnants of a Garden City, and Northern Munich

Quiet life with charm

Lerchenau is located in the southeastern part of the large northern district of Feldmoching-Hasenbergl. The Cultural History Trail even distinguishes within the district between Hasenbergl–Lerchenau East and Lerchenau West, which shows that the area is not considered entirely homogeneous even from an urban planning perspective. From a residential perspective, this is precisely what makes it helpful: Lerchenau is not a single, uniform unit, but a neighborhood with diverse residential landscapes.

Neighboring Neighborhoods and Key Landmarks

For everyday life, Feldmoching, Fasanerie, Hasenbergl, and Am Hart are particularly important points of reference in the surrounding area. In terms of scenery and recreation, the area is also shaped by its proximity to the so-called “Dreiseenplatte” in northern Munich, which includes Lerchenauer See. As a result, Lerchenau combines peaceful living with short distances to neighboring districts and larger recreational areas.

Lerchenau is particularly appealing to people who want to live in a quieter, greener part of Munich. The neighborhood combines small-scale residential structures with larger housing complexes around Lake Lerchenau. A defining feature is the mix of taller apartment buildings and single-family homes in the area. This creates a residential neighborhood with greater diversity than its quiet overall impression might initially suggest.

Lerchenau is neither a purely garden-style neighborhood nor a monotonous large-scale housing development. Rather, remnants of the garden city, postwar development, larger residential complexes, and expansive open spaces all come together here. This makes the neighborhood particularly appealing to families, couples who need space, commuters working in northern Munich, and people who prefer temporary housing in a quiet location with access to a lake and green spaces.

Shopping

Lerchenau is also well-suited for everyday life thanks to its small, scattered infrastructure elements. These include the Lerchenau See weekly market at the corner of Franz-Fackler-Straße and Lasallestraße, as well as the existing shops and restaurants that Mr. Lodge highlights for the neighborhood. While this doesn’t amount to a dense shopping center, it does provide a very solid set of basic amenities for a quiet residential neighborhood.

Gastronomy

Lerchenau is particularly appealing to families because there are several educational and childcare options available both locally and in the immediate vicinity. These include the elementary school at Lerchenauer Straße 322, the new school complex at Waldmeisterstraße 38, and Joki Kinderbetreuung Lerchenau, a childcare center at Lerchenauer Straße 162. In addition, a large school and sports campus is being built at Lerchenau Feld, featuring a high school, an elementary school, sports halls, and an indoor swimming pool. This combination speaks to a strong family-oriented atmosphere in the neighborhood and its surroundings.

Leisure

Lerchenau is also well-equipped for sports. At Lerchenauer Straße 270, there is an official sports complex with natural and artificial turf fields; in addition, Mr. Lodge points to the Lerchenau District Sports Complex as an active component of the community’s recreational offerings. This is important for the area’s livability, because recreational opportunities here aren’t limited to the lake.
