Garching is located approx. 17 km north of Munich (Zentrum). Due to the rapid growth of the population, the new development areas have been expanded and the infrastructure and quality of life have been considerably improved by the creation of social and cultural facilities. Nowadays there is a wide range of cultural activities on offer in Garching, such as events, theater performances and concerts, most of which take place in the Kulturhaus or Theater am Römerhof. Hochbrück is predominantly an industrial area. Since the construction of Germany's first research reactor in 1957, which has since been decommissioned, numerous research facilities have settled here alongside institutes of the Technical University and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. Thanks to the research center, the municipality has also gained national and international renown.
Transport links
Garching is connected to local public transport with two stations on the U6 underground line: the city center can be easily reached from the Garching and Garching-Forschungszentrum stations. The nearby slip road to the A9 highway connects Garching to the long-distance transport network.
